You do that CrossFit?

7 May

I decided it’s time for me to update the ol’ blog. I realize it’s been almost a year but…
Well, I have no excuse actually.

The latest news to share is my new obsession.

Prepare yourselves to read much much more about my CrossFit journey. What is CrossFit you say?

This short video sums it up nicely.
If after watching that video, you’re still not sure what it’s all about- here’s an example of what my daily routine looks like:

1) 10m Warm-up (Rowing, Running, Jumping Rope)

2) 10-20m Stretching/Mobility

3) Strength Skill (Squat, Front Squat, Deadlift, Overhead Squat, Clean & Jerk, Snatch, etc)

We usually work the following: 5-5-3-3-1 reps adding weight for a 1-rep max. Of course, the priority here is perfect form, then speed.

4) WOD.

WOD stands for Workout of the Day. This is what I get nervous for every time I step into the gym. You never know what to expect, and a WOD that looks easy may just be the ugliest and most difficult workout you’ve ever experienced. You usually are trying to do as many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in a set amount of time OR a set amount of rounds for the fastest time. Either way, you are going as fast as possible while still keeping form and not dying. Also, any of the workouts can be scaled so that any one at any fitness level can participate.

I will share an example of a WOD- the one I did today.

– 30 Squats (135lbs for women/195lbs for men)
– 100 Jump Rope Rotations
– 7 Burpees
– 1 Minute Rest
3 Rounds for Time.

Let me just tell ya- this one was gnarly. Even one of my coaches almost got the pukie.

5) Accessory Work/Mobility

This is where we will do little extras to just push the muscle groups we had just worked in the WOD a bit further. Also, more stretching is appropriate here.

The beauty of CrossFit is that it incorporates Mobility, Strength and Endurance all in one. It’s this “fitness trifecta” that I believe makes the fittest people possible. In the last 7 weeks I’ve been doing CrossFit, I have experienced gains in all these areas and have built confidence in my abilities. It’s amazing what the body will do if you just get your head out of the way.

Speaking of what the body can do, I recently hit a BIG milestone in my CrossFit journey. One that I will share in my next post!

Until then,

Peace. Love. Health.
